1. Find a money maker
You may be surprised by this, but: you need to know what you are going to be selling before you do anything else. The only exception to this rule may be if you are planning to monetize your website using Adsense, in which case you can choose from many niches. But, in the case of an affiliate product, you don’t choose the niche and the product afterward. You choose the product first and the niche implicitly.
2. Decide the type of website you are going to build
Here, you have 2 basic options: you can build a small niche site centered around the particular product, or build a large website that is going to attract a lot of search engine traffic. In order to find about the advantages or disadvantages of each method, read the article “Small Niche Site vs Large Authority Site”
3. Keyword Research
This is where 90% of the people get it all wrong. They don’t realize the importance of keyword research. Keyword research is the foundation of all your future work. If you don’t get this right, you are doomed from the get go. You are not going to get targeted visitors and you are probably not going to get search engine traffic at all. And although there are a lot of people who quickly dismiss search engine traffic under the pretense that they don’t want to depend on Google, it is the best kind of traffic you could ever get. People who dismiss it do so simply because they have no idea how to get it. How to do keyword research can be the subject of a small book, I could write on and on about it. I consider the best tools for this task to be Google’s tool and Keyword Discovery.
4. Content creation
You should now start creating your content around the keywords that you have chosen. If you want to build a small niche site, content creation will not be very difficult. However, if you plan on building a large site, it may take a while. You can outsource it if you like, but make sure that you always have unique content on your website. For a website that’s going to make you money, unique content is always the best bet.
5. On page Search Engine Optimization
Of course, I will not include tasks like uploading the website to your server in this small guide, these are self implied. Proper on page search engine optimization includes the following tasks:
- proper use of title tags;
- proper use of meta description tags;
- use of H1 and H2 headers;
- bold the main keywords on a page, but not more than a few times;
- using alt tags for images;
- designing a proper internal website structure.
6. Link building
Without targeted links, your business will never be productive. Read that again and remember it. Getting the right links to your website and in the right way is almost an art. Some people have more complex classifications, but I only split the links in two categories: crappy links and quality links. I define crappy links as being the links you get from article directories or social bookmarking sites, while quality links for me are in context links, from medium quality sites and up, anchored with my keyword, and with the keyword in the title tag of the page that’s linking to me. Again, I could write a whole book on the subject of link building.

20 Unique & Handy SEO Tips
There are thousands of tips available to the Do-It-Yourself webmaster who wants a boost in SEO rank. Unfortunately, only rarely do any of these “insights” turn into ideas that actually work. And, if they do, it could take ages to see any visible effect on search rankings! The other alternative is to hire someone — who’ll likely charge an arm and leg to get a visible boost in SEO rank and who’s strategies may do as much harm as good.
1) Be Prepared. The first thing you need to do is make sure and be sure that your site is ready for Search Engine Optimization. You do not want your visitors to arrive to an unfinished and incomplete site. “Coming Soon” and “Under Construction” pages will repel them to other more useful sites.
2) Avoid Javascript. If you absolutely MUST use Java script drop down menus, image maps or image links, be sure to put text links somewhere on the page for the spiders to follow.
3) Content is King. Be sure to have good, well-written and unique content that will focus on your primary keyword or keyword phrase.
4) Build Backlinks. If content is believed to be king, then links are queen. Build a network of quality back links using your keyword phrase as the link. Remember, if there is no good, logical reason for that site to link to you, you don’t want the link.
5) Don’t obsess over PageRank. It is just one isty bitsy part of the ranking algorithm. A site with lower PR can actually outrank one with a higher PR.
6) Focus on Titles. Be sure you have a unique, keyword focused Title tag on every page of your site. And, if you MUST have the name of your company in it, put it at the end. Unless you are a major brand name that is a household name, your business name will probably get few searches.
7) Keep it Fresh! Fresh content can help improve your rankings. Add new, useful content to your pages on a regular basis. Content freshness adds relevancy to your site in the eyes of the search engines.
8) The Key to Good Links. Be sure links to your site and within your site use your keyword phrase. In other words, if your target is “blue widgets” then link to “blue widgets” instead of a simple detail lacking “Click here” link.
9) Phrasing it Correctly. Focus on search phrases, not single keywords, and put your location in your text (“our Palm Springs store” not “our store”) to help you get found in local searches.
10) Don’t Design in a Vaccum. Don’t design your web site without considering SEO. If you’re not the web designer then make sure this person understands your expectations for organic SEO. Doing a retrofit on your shiny new Flash-based site after it is built won’t cut it. Spiders can crawl text, not Flash or images.
11) Keep Adding Keywords. Use keywords and keyword phrases appropriately in text links, image ALT attributes and even your domain name.
12) Don’t Split Your Link Juice. Check for canonicalization issues - www and non-www domains. Decide which you want to use and 301 redirect the other to it. In other words, if http://www.domain.com is your preference, then http://domain.com should redirect to it.
13) Ditch the Long Names. Check the link to your home page throughout your site. Is index.html appended to your domain name? If so, you’re splitting your links. Outside links go to http://www.domain.com and internal links go to http://www.domain.com/index.html. Ditch the index.html or default.php or whatever the page is and always link back to your domain.
14) Forget About Frames! Frames, Flash and AJAX all share a common problem - you can’t link to a single page. It’s either all or nothing. Don’t use Frames at all and use Flash and AJAX sparingly for best SEO results.
15) What Really Counts. Your URL file extension doesn’t matter. You can use .html, .htm, .asp, .php, etc. and it won’t make a difference as far as your SEO is concerned.
16) Get Indexed Quickly. Got a new web site you want spidered? Submitting through Google’s regular submission form can take several grueling weeks. The quickest way to get your site spidered is by getting a link to it through another quality site, as well as submitting your site to several free search engines which submit your site to 100’s of others on one simple submission. For Example: Fast Submit SEO Site
17) Start a Blog. If your site content doesn’t change often, your site needs a blog because search spiders like fresh text. Blog at least three times a week with good, fresh content to feed those little crawlers.
18) Quality Counts. When link building, think quality, not quantity. One single, good, authoritative link can do a lot more for you than a dozen poor quality links, which can actually hurt you.
19) Don’t Abuse The System. Search engines want natural language content. Don’t try to stuff your text with keywords. It won’t work. Search engines look at how many times a term is in your content and if it is abnormally high, will count this against you rather than for you, due to the fact that there are many web developers that try to abuse SEO keywords.
20) Guilt by Association. If you are on a shared server, do a blacklist check to be sure you’re not on a proxy with a spammer or banned site. Their negative notoriety could affect your own rankings.
And there you have it! 20 tips and tricks uniquely fit for many if not all of your SEO needs!

How To Drive Targeted Traffic to Your Website
You will need visitors to your site that are looking for exactly what you are offering, which is known as targeted traffic. Here are ten proven ways you can drive quality traffic to your affiliate marketing business site and increase your online income:
1. Articles
Well-written, informative how-to articles are proven traffic baits for affiliate marketing business sites. Use the resource box to provide additional links and include links in the content body to similar or additional information that can only be read on your site.
2. Email campaigns
Email campaigns, used carefully, can easily drive targeted traffic to your affiliate marketing business site. By providing highly relevant and valuable information in the body of the email message and then offering a link that will take the recipients to your site.
You can provide the full content in the email message and then offer a link inviting the recipient to view more similar write-ups on your site. Or give only a portion of the content in the email and offer the rest on your affiliate marketing site. A link in your signature should also be provided.
3. Blogs
Apart from your affiliate marketing site, use a blog to keep in touch with prospective customers and members. Blogs are considerably more personal and lighter in tone than most affiliate business sites and they can be a great source of information, news, advice and tips from you to your prospects. Include a link from your blog to your affiliate marketing site. Allow comments too so your visitors can interact with you.
4. Ezines and Newsletters
Information is what people are searching for on the internet. By using proven methods to drive targeted traffic to your affiliate marketing business and offering a free ezine or newsletter about the subjects your visitors are interested in, will result in many visitors opting-in to receive your information.
Offer your visitors free bonuses such as eBooks for signing up to your free newsletter. Either use a separate landing page to handle the subscription process or have the subscription box placed above the fold on your website where it is clearly visible.
5. Discussion boards and forums
You can encourage other members to react and send you a reply by leaving useful and thought-provoking comments on discussion boards and forums. This will enable you to build a networking relationship from here. Be sure to sign with a link back to your affiliate marketing business website.
6. Social bookmarking sites
You will find that these sites are a rich source of targeted traffic that you can drive to your affiliate marketing business site. Your market demographics are also easier to define so sending out invitations to potential leads and members is much simpler.
7. Guest blogging
By becoming a guest blogger you could drive another blog’s captured traffic to your affiliate site. The site’s readership will find you interesting enough to follow you to your own site if you can write well and can offer unique and useful content.
8. Host a contest
Locate your target market and then promote a contest through ads or e-mails. All details must be found on your affiliate marketing website so you can drive traffic there. Registration must also be performed on one of your landing pages. Just make sure to offer prizes that visitors who will be coming in will find useful.
9. Allow bookmarks on your web pages
You can drive traffic to your affiliate marketing site by allowing your readers to bookmark certain pages that contain good content. This will help promote those pages and your website to other people who might be interested in the same subjects.
10. Offer freebies!
Everybody loves a freebie! There’s nothing like a free gift to drive targeted traffic to your affiliate marketing site. It’s easy to implement and can be relatively cheap or even free. Also, you can offer these visitors an incentive to sign up for whatever campaign it is you are promoting.

11 Must Use SEO Tips for Web Designers
Today most web designers do more than just design the look and feel of a web site. They often play a major part in writing the front end code. This means that a big part of the SEO or Search Engine Optimization responsibilities should fall on the designer. However, there is a large number of web designers that don’t understand this subject well enough to create a site that is fully optimized for search engines.
This article is here to provide some important tips that will aid the average and even above average web designer in improving their SEO skills.
1. Make the code prettier than the design
When building the front end of your site, make sure to use semantic code. By using descriptive tags to structure your pages, search engines will be able to read and have a better understanding of your content. This will also make the process of styling your site much easier and cleaner.
2. Use but don’t abuse your keywords
Keywords are the words that describe your content. It’s important to have them appear in strategic places throughout your page, such as: URL, title tag, and main heading tags. It’s also important to have it appear often in the body of the content, but not too often, which might cause your content to be penalized for keyword stuffing.
3. Avoid using Flash for navigation
As tempting as it is to whip out some nice looking drop down effects for your site’s navigation using flash, don’t do it. Search engines have trouble reading flash files, which means the links used in the navigation can’t be followed.
4. Use unique page titles
Each page on your web site should have a title attribute, and each title should be unique. If you use the same title for every page, search engines will think that every page on your site is about the same subject.
5. Don’t forget about images
Make use of the alt attribute of an image to properly describe it. As smart as search engines are, they can’t see what an image looks like. Failing to this can cost you substantial traffic from image searches.
6. Don’t use generic links
Search engines place a high importance on links. So when linking to relevant content, be sure to use a word that describes the content. For example, if you were giving your reader a link to learn more about Photosop, use something like “Learn more about Photoshop” as opposed to just “Learn More”.
7. Don’t use images to replace text
As designers, we always want to make things look as good as possible. This means sometimes replacing ugly browser rendered heading text with a nice smooth image. Try to avoid doing this. Again, search engines can’t see the contents of an image, and this is where you should be putting your keywords.
Edit: Looks like I misspoke(or mistyped) on this one. There are valid ways to accomplish this, such as FIR.
8. Use AJAX sparingly
Ajax is great for enhancing the user experience, but try not to over do it. Content generated with ajax can’t be linked to. A good rule of thumb is: if what you are loading with AJAX can be an individual page, then avoid using it.
9. Get indexed quickly
To get your site indexed in search engines in a timely manner, try getting it linked to by a popular site in a related niche. Submitting it to Google also works, but sometimes it can take several days if not weeks.
10. Build incoming links
The number and quality of incoming links plays a big role in the placement of your site in search results. Having quality and unique content is a good way to get people to link to your site. Another way is to be generous with your own links.
11. Use a consistent URL
When you build a site, decide from the beginning if you want to use or drop the “www”. Once you decide, stick with it. Search engines, for example, see www.webdesignledger and webdesignledger.com as two different sites and as duplicate content, which they do not like.

Site Design factors for SEO
A small page. A small page is quick to download and generally faster for your browser to display. This results in a minimalist design aesthetic; extra fanciness in the interface slows down the page without giving you much benefit.
Complex algorithms with a simple presentation. Many search features require a great deal of algorithmic complexity and a vast amount of data analysis to make them work well. The trick is to hide all that complexity behind a clean, intuitive user interface. Spelling correction, snippets, sitelinks and query refinements are examples of features that require sophisticated algorithms and are constantly improving. From the user’s point of view search, almost invisibly, just works better.
Features that work everywhere. Features must be designed such that the algorithms and presentation can be adapted to work in all languages and countries. Consider the problem of spell correction in Chinese, where user queries are often not broken up into words or Hebrew/Arabic, where text is written right to left (interestingly, this is believed to be an example of first-mover disadvantage — when chiseling on stone, it is easier to hold the hammer in your right hand!).
Data driven decisions - experiment, experiment, experiment. We try to verify that we’ve done the right thing by running experiments. Designs that may seem promising may end up testing poorly.

Tips For Search Engine Friendly Website Design
A search engine friendly website with unique content is an extremely important asset for to have more traffic and success on the internet. Cluttered and unorganized content turns people off. However without traffic, even a well designed site will not produce results for you. As people use search engines to find information, products or services which are very useful for them. So, web site owners who offer these things take necessary steps to ensure that their site gains high ranking for a particular keyword phrase or at least on the first page of results.
The best websites are those that are both attractive and easy to use for an online user. Web site owners should keep in mind that site is for end users, not for search engines and also target the audience with the content they are looking for is convenient for the search engine robots that are trying to find and collect data from your site.
There are few things to look for when designing new sites or optimizing an existing site.
1)Web Content: Web sites should always be designed with your target audience in mind with unique content which should be readable and insert between 200-500 words of rich search engine friendly content on each of your site pages.
2)Site Navigation: Ensure that each and every page of your site has clear navigation. It’s frustrating for users to click on something and encounter the dreaded 404 Error Page Not Found.
3)Title, Meta keyword and Description Tags: The title tag is extremely important to both search engine users and search engine spiders, if it’s not optimized properly, than you’ve lost a vital source for high rankings. The information in Meta keyword and description tags can influence how search engines view your site, and optimally the description that you write will show up in search engine listings, so try keep it clean with useful tags.
4)Search engine spider cannot understand the text written on images. So, try to avoid flash animations, java objects and dynamic contents. Create alternate navigation using anchor text if your website is JS menu drive or contains flash menus.
5)Create sitemap links to important pages as sitemap act as alternate access point to website and dynamic pages should be converted into search engine safe URL’s using various tools.
6)Avoid using frames as search engine spiders have difficulty in index websites using frames and create rich content information rather than doorway pages.
By following the above guidelines will be helpful to design search engine friendly website and can provide website rankings among the top search engines.
