Yahoo! is experimenting with new ads as part of its pay per click services, according to TechCrunch.
The blog's Erick Schonfield reported that the search engine has started to add elements such as logos and images to some of its paid search ads.
For example, a search for eBay may bring up a sponsored search ad that comes with the logo for the auction website.
The tests break with the convention of only using text in pay per click adverts.
Pictures, brand logos, videos, search boxes and deep links are among the additions being tested by Yahoo!, a spokesperson for the company confirmed to TechCrunch.
"As long as they are not too blaring, I think they'll work," Mr Schonfield said in his post.
"Any image will pop in that sea of text on the search results page. And both Yahoo and Google are already incorporating images and videos in their natural search results."
Meanwhile, Google is currently testing text ads on its search results pages for image queries.

Mobile websites 'need adequate SEO'
Businesses must do more to ensure their mobile websites have a presence in search engine listings, an expert has asserted.
According to Mobile Commerce chief executive Steve Page, not enough mobile sites in the travel sector in particular make adequate use of search engine optimisation (SEO) to stay high in search rankings, TravelMole reports.
He told the EyeforTravel Mobile Technology in Travel seminar: "We know that web users on mobiles tend to use a search tool like Google or Yahoo! to find what they want rather than going direct to the website they need, so it's incredibly important that people are properly directed to your site once they have searched."
Mr Page went on to demonstrate the need for mobile SEO by conducting a search for British Airways (BA) on his own handset. Both the normal BA site and bmi's website ranked higher than the airline's mobile site.
According to Nielsen Mobile, online search is the second most popular mobile web activity among European handset owners.

Why Video SEO is hard for political campaigns
Eric elaborated on what have been some of the major obstacles for candidates to heavily engage in an organic video strategy:
Small online marketing teams. Eric’s own company found that even on the Presidential scale, both candidates have very small teams that are dedicated to digital media. “Each team only has a few people that are dedicated to all of online. Really devoting the time and resources have been a manpower issue.” Despite this limited manpower, each candidate’s YouTube channels have actually been performing very good.
Traditional conversion goals. Most online marketing for candidates have been about ROI and direct-response, i.e., fundraising. “Even though both candidates did a really good job in the social search space, their unique online ads were confined to display and search, rather than video content.” says Eric.
Advertising venue limitations. Most of the online advertising by the candidates were done in the search space, and in the portals and ad networks, the latter of “which really don’t allow for a lot of out-of-the-box online tactics when it comes to online video. Portals and ad networks need to be very standard to have a scalable offering sometimes.” says Eric.

SEO Basics for Business Bloggers
SEO, or search engine optimization, is an effective online marketing strategy that increases your search traffic by improving the search rankings of your site’s pages. By know, most webmasters realize that getting multiple top 10 rankings on Google is a very good thing.
There are technical aspects to SEO that are complicated, but luckily, the fundamental SEO principles of SEO are not rocket science.
To learn SEO, you should first understand the most weighty factors that search engines use to rank pages.
These following four elements make up a big chunk of the search engine algorithm. If you can nail these elements, you’ll be ahead of most bloggers and webmasters.
1. Title tag
Search engines look at the keywords in the title tag. If you have relevant keywords in the title tag, you’ll automatically rank better for those keywords.
2. Quality links from other sites
Search engines also look to see if quality sites are linking to your site. If you get a lot of links from quality sites, then you’ll see an increase in search traffic.
3. Anchor text
Anchor text are the words contained in a link. For example, I can link to my home page with the anchor text business blogs to rank better for that search term. However, it’s much more effective to get anchor text on links from other sites.
4. Body text
Finally, we have body text. With people using keywords to search, it makes sense that search engines would check out the text on a page.

Performance Related SEO In An Economic Downturn
Like a number of SEO companies we have occasionally offered performance related services in the past. These normally work by us taking a percentage of the increase in revenue we drive via organic search.
The problem with these agreements is when it comes to setting benchmark figures to measure our performance against. When the economy is in freefall and retailers in most industries are issuing profit warnings even the best SEO companies might struggle to achieve positive growth over the next 24 months.
Some industries such as insurance and payday loans are recession proof but in retail it wouldn’t be a surprise to see online revenues falling by 20-40%. Any SEO company on a performance related contract benchmarked against last years turnover is going to really struggle!
Of course SEO is a fantastic way to increase profitability during these uncertain times. If you can maintain turnover while your competitors are losing then you gain valuable market share. Once the economy recovers you have a huge advantage by being at the top of Google for all your keywords.

5 SEO Mistakes that Kill Your Website
If you’re the owner of a small business, you might be tempted to implement an SEO strategy by yourself. After all, it can get costly hiring an expert to do your SEO, and there are several things you can do if you take your time to learn SEO properly. Of course, you also open yourself to making many crucial SEO mistakes.
What follows is a list of 5 common SEO mistakes that will undo all of your hard word. Avoid these at all costs.
1. Targeting Broad Keywords- Let’s suppose you operate a small business that sells doors in Houston. As nice as it would be to rank for the phrase “doors,” the truth is you have absolutely no shot at doing that. Trying to do so is a waste of your time. Instead, you should try to rank for phrases like “hurricane proof doors” or “door installation in Houston.” The more specific your keywords, the more targeted your traffic will be.
2. Keyword Stuffing- As a copywriter, this is my biggest pet peeve. People get so caught up in making sure their keywords are peppered throughout the content that they completely ignore how it reads. Your readers shouldn’t be able to tell that your content has keywords in it. It should read like any other copy. What’s the point of ranking well if your content is unreadable?
3. Design not Crawler-Friendly- In order to give yourself the best chance of ranking well, your design needs to be crawler-friendly. Even though the search spiders have gotten better at crawling flash sites, you should stick with an easy-to-crawl CSS layout. This helps the spiders go through your site in a logical manner to ensure they rank your site properly for the relevant keywords.
4. Disorganized Content- Stop trying to do too much on your webpage. Disorganized content not only hampers your site’s usability, but it also prevents you from targeting additional keywords. Divide your content logically among several pages. This keeps each page short, focused, and targeted on specific keywords. It gives you the best chance of reducing your bounce rate and improving you rankings for multiple key phrases.
5. Ignoring the User- This is probably the most common SEO mistake I see. In a way, it goes back to point #2. If you’re new to SEO, it can be easy to get caught up in tailoring your site to the search engine’s specifications. The problem comes when you place a higher priority on pleasing the search engines than your human users. You should never sacrifice usability for the sake of accommodating the search engines. Instead, you can have the best of both worlds—SEO friendly and user-friendly. Keep your site easy to navigate for both the search spiders and your users. This way, you can convert those high search engine rankings into increased sales for your small business.

Want to Increase Website Traffic? Easy SEO Tips!
In fact your SEO journey has just begun! Your site is built and functional, but so are a lot of sites out there. What is going to make your priority according to search engines, better than the other guys?
There are quite a few things we can do for good SEO. The first we are going to look at is the domain name. If you have a domain name such as IWB for selling a butter product, called I Want Butter, you’re not going to get very far. It’s not to say you will fail completely at SEO, but to optimize your chances, you should have a domain name that contains your keywords.
The domain ILoveButter or IWantButter would be optimal. You might have to get a bit creative depending on what domain names are available. These days you can register a domain for as little as seven dollars a year, it is a great investment that will insure great SEO rankings.
Some people will tell you that you’re site will take months to be crawled by the search engines if you register a new domain. Not True! Last week I built a brand new site on Tuesday. It was finished at 3PM. By Wednesday at noon, search engine bots were all over it.
How did I achieve that? Well, I had optimized my keywords, homepage text, and landing pages. But I also did the below steps. If you do these too, you can ensure great SEO rankings. Read More...

Search Engines And The Effect On SEO
Search Engines look for relevant content when a person makes a search based on a particular keyword. So your website should have relevant content in order to rank high in SERP. It is the process of increasing the amount of visitors to your website by ranking high in the search results of a search engine. Search engine optimization can be worked into a site while designing it you can optimize the site after it is designed. The key for which the optimization of the website is done is known as the “Search phrases” or the “keyword”. Doing search engine optimization is about creating traffic for your site. Search engine optimization can be performed on virtually any websites and is one of the most powerful ways of advertising for any business wanting to secure a stable online presence. Search engine optimization is big business.
The reason for this is people search the search engines for keywords looking for specific information. Place your keywords in the meta tag titles and description to make each page different, by creating this the search engines will rank your page better. Often when you’re searching for keywords, it is easy to forget the real purpose behind the keywords. Many webmasters are using software that analyzes the traffic compared to the consumer behavior on the website. By doing this you now can tell which keywords are working and bringing visitors to your website.
Many webmasters worry about page rank, this is not the only thing you should worry about, you should promote keywords that will bring traffic, by doing this your traffic will increase and so will your page rank. The traffic that you get from good links will make a steady contribution to your websites success. Links from related or relevant sites are more important than generic links from unrelated websites. A modern approach to Flash SEO
Search engine optimization is one of the most popular subjects when nerds sit around and talk about Flash. “Does Google index your swf files?” seems to be the most popular question, usually garnering plenty of ‘yes‘ and ‘no’ and ‘maybe’ answers. The real answer to this question, once and for all, is this:
It doesn’t matter.
To understand this answer, you need to understand what Flash is. And to do that, you need to understand modern web development philosophy. First off, you need to embrace web standards. Semantic markup and separating content from style and behavior is the only way you should be building your sites. Many web standardistas have been recommending this method of web development for years, and rightly so. However, this post isn’t the place to go into the whys of this type of development, so I’ll skip that part and just say this about how it’s done: There are three areas of front-end web development: Content, Style, and Behavior. You should always keep these three things separated as much as possible.
That brings up the question: “Where does Flash fit into this three pillar method of web development?” Is it content? Is it behavior? Is it style? While it could be considered all three, most professional Flash developers will remove the content from their Flash movies and load it in using Flash remoting or XML files. That leaves us with style and behavior.

10 Areas Where SEO and PPC Can Work Together
SEO or SEM (PPC), organic vs. sponsored? Where should your online marketing budgets go? Well the answer is both. SEO and PPC can work very nicely together depending on where you are with your online marketing efforts. We came up with ten instances where SEO and PPC should be used together as an effective online marketing campaign.
1. Preparing for a Site Redesign - when planning a redesign and making sure that all of the SEO best practice are being put in place as you prepare to launch, you’ll want to bolster your online campaign with sponsored efforts as you transition your site from the old site to the new. Once the SEO efforts kick in post launch, you can reduce your PPC spend and focus your sponsored efforts elsewhere.
2. Preparing to Launch a Microsite - Microsites allow you to try out a more targeted online strategy. For quick traffic generation to your new micro site, you’ll want to utilize an well planned sponsored strategy. At the same time your SEO efforts can be geared towards a focus on long-tail, and less competitive keywords to drive additional traffic to the micro site.
3. Launching a new Sub-Domain - Similar to launching a microsite, sponsored efforts can be used to direct traffic to the new sub-domain while an SEO strategy can be developed to obtain long term rankings for the sub-domain.
4. Launching a new Website - Anytime you launch a new website, you should have both an SEO and SEM strategy working together to help obtain traffic to your new web property. Initially your sponsored strategy might be the only means of driving traffic to your new site, until you can improve your visibility in the natural search results of the search engines.
5. Marketing Your Website on a Shoestring Budget - If you have a tight budget, you can focus efforts on SEO and compliment that with a smaller PPC strategy where you bid on phrases that are less expensive. You may want to focus your PPC spend for local search while you concentrate your SEO efforts for more general search engines rankings. As you develop content through SEO and on-page optimization the only cost you incur is time.
6. Company Mergers & Merging Web Properties - In the dynamic economic environment that we have experienced in recent years, it’s not uncommon to see companies merge. Quite often startups are bought out and you are left with multiple web properties at your disposal. This is another great example of when you should be using SEO and PPC simultaneously to educate your target audience of your recent merger or acquisition. You may want to phase the old company out, as a result you may want to move some content from that companies website to your own. Developing an SEO transition strategy that is backed up by a solid PPC strategy can be an effective way to educate your existing consumers as well as any new prospects who may be looking for your solution.
7. Releasing a New Product Line - PPC can be used in conjunction with SEO to promote your new product or solution line. Chances are that your new product name will be easy to rank for organically, backing that up with some non-branded traffic from sponsored efforts and you can quickly achieve some additional branded and non-branded traffic that will convert on your site with the proper type of messaging and promotion.
8. Online Reputation Management Campaigns - Experienced some negative press? Use SEO and sponsored solutions to protect your brand in the online space. From an SEO point of view, you’ll want to ensure that any negative organic listings are pushed to page two of the search results page, by optimizing your site for blended search, and leveraging social networks to dominant the SERP landscape. Furthermore you will want to protect your branded via PPC efforts so that negative or "questionable" listings do not appear within the sponsored results.
9. Entering New Markets - If your company is large enough to go global or is entering new regional markets, you might want to use SEO and PPC to target these geographic demographics. Depending on your expansion, you might want to try a GEO-targeted sponsored campaign, backed up with content development for organic rankings in the natural search results of the search engines.
10. Plateauing Search Engine Traffic - Seen your website traffic start to plateau? Maybe you need to modify or add a sponsored strategy to your SEO strategy or vice versa. Revisit both your SEO and PPC efforts and get creative with some new messaging to drive more traffic to your site.

Things You Should Expect from an SEO
Stoney DeGeyter has written an insightful piece on Search Engine Guide on what you should expect from your SEO consultant. Obviously, depending on your goals, this may differ, but the ideas are the same. He explains that traffic is something to look at, but that's not what the client should only seek.
