Businesses must do more to ensure their mobile websites have a presence in search engine listings, an expert has asserted.
According to Mobile Commerce chief executive Steve Page, not enough mobile sites in the travel sector in particular make adequate use of search engine optimisation (SEO) to stay high in search rankings, TravelMole reports.
He told the EyeforTravel Mobile Technology in Travel seminar: "We know that web users on mobiles tend to use a search tool like Google or Yahoo! to find what they want rather than going direct to the website they need, so it's incredibly important that people are properly directed to your site once they have searched."
Mr Page went on to demonstrate the need for mobile SEO by conducting a search for British Airways (BA) on his own handset. Both the normal BA site and bmi's website ranked higher than the airline's mobile site.
According to Nielsen Mobile, online search is the second most popular mobile web activity among European handset owners.
